No Country is a Shithole

The ex-President of Mexico, Vicente Fox, said it best: Trump’s mouth is the foulest shithole in the world.

It would be an understatement to say that Donald Trump is an incompetent fool who has no idea what he is doing. That is so blatantly evident that it doesn’t need me to reiterate. But, it is necessary for all of us who are so offended by his glaring ignorant incompetence to stand up for the people he harms on a daily basis. I’m not American so I can’t put my vote where my mouth is. But I can use my experience as a world traveller and my power as a writer (however small that may be) to challenge his foul words.

The only shitholes are the mouths of President Trump and his supporters.

I’m the content editor at Pink Pangea, a website for women who love to travel, and I used my most recent newsletter to encourage appreciation of and respect for the countries that Trump insulted.

I’m copying the newsletter here for those of you who don’t subscribe to Pink Pangea’s newsletters. Check out the website if you haven’t already, and I hope you’ll support us by reading our stories of travels in countries that are definitely not shitholes.

Hi everyone,

As travellers, we see the beauty in everywhere we go—the resilience of the people, their hospitality, incredible landscapes, cultural differences and similarities with the places we call home. So, we were disgusted by the recent comments made by the President of the United States.

Some countries are more developed than others; some are more of a challenge to travel and live in, and some make us recognize our own privilege and good fortune. But nowhere is a shithole. Everywhere is a place that somebody calls home, that somebody has worked hard to create and defend—sometimes in difficult circumstances that American billionaires could never even imagine. We are world travellers and we know this from experience, and we also know that his comments don’t speak for all US citizens.

This week we’ve dug up some of our favourite articles celebrating the people and places that the president so erroneously insulted.

If you’d like to share your own tales of humanity, adventure and experience in Haiti, El Salvador, an African country or anywhere else that was lumped into his statement, please get in touch at

When Aloe had been preparing for her solo trip through Central America and Mexico, countless people had cautioned her against it. “You’ll get robbed,” they said. “The people down there are desperate.” She found this far from the truth.

Mirna didn’t think that South Africa would be a good destination to travel solo, but in reality found that it was safe, easy to get around, and affordable. A perfect place for backpackers!

  1. It felt really bad when Trump labeled Nepal as shithole country. Well, Nepal is a poor country and life here is definitely very miserable. However, the President does not have rights to defame Nepal just because few thousand Nepalese go to the US as students and choose to make the US their home.

    1. He is an ignorant fool, I wouldn’t waste time feeling bad about anything he says. He doesn’t understand the first thing about the world.
